Fitter people do better work

By Tom Collins, Co-Founder and Head Coach 6 min read

So, firstly I would say this sounds obvious, but the strength of the link genuinely surprises people. Physical fitness does not just make your people healthier. It makes them better at their jobs.

BLUF: fitter, better-fuelled people have more energy, sharper focus and steadier performance through the day. The evidence is strong, and most workplaces are leaving it on the table.

What the evidence says

A well-known study by Pronk and colleagues found that higher physical activity and cardiovascular fitness were linked to better quality and quantity of work, and less extra effort needed to keep up. Separately, Vitality found physically inactive employees lose about 28% more productive time, and those with a poor diet around 14% more.

These are not soft wellbeing points. They are direct measures of output.

Why it works, kept simple

  • Energy. Fitter people have more in the tank, so there is no 3pm cliff-edge.
  • Focus. Exercise sharpens attention and clears the head.
  • Sleep. Better sleep means better decisions the next day.
  • Recovery. A fit body bounces back from a hard day faster, physically and mentally.

So what that means is simple. A fit body is a better platform for a working brain. You cannot get peak performance from people running on empty.

Why most workplaces miss it

Table football and free coffee do not touch physical fitness. Neither does a benefits portal nobody opens. Fitness is the performance lever most workplaces never actually pull, which is exactly why there is so much to gain from pulling it.

What to do about it

Here's what to do: treat fitness as a performance input, not a perk.

  1. Build it into the culture, coached and structured.
  2. Make it genuinely accessible to everyone, not just the already-keen.
  3. Measure the change, so people can see the progress.

The key takeaway

Fitter bodies do better work. It is one of the most under-used performance levers you have, and it is available to your whole workforce.

If you want your people performing at their best rather than pushing through on empty, don't sit on it. Get in touch and we will show you how it could work.
